SGI Indigo Magic support for Elm Revised 21 Sep 94 The 'elm-im-support' distribution may include the following: README This file README.tag Elm's certificate of Workspaceness HISTORY A list of the changes made between each release TODO A list of the changes I haven't made yet Makefile A Makefile which installs everything. See below. elm.ftr Elm filetype rules 'elm-im-support' requires IRIX 5.2 or greater and Elm 2.3.11 or greater. It works under IRIX 5.2 and Elm 2.4.23. Installation: 1) Install Indigo Magic on your system, if you haven't already. 2) Build Elm and install it either publically or in your own binaries directory, if you haven't already. 3) Look at the Makefile and make sure that the directories near the top are correct. (They should be, except perhaps for the location of Elm.) 4) 'su' to root and 'make install'. Two things happen during installation: 1) an .ftr file with a new Elm icon and modified mailfile and mailbox icons is added to the icon catalog and 2) the Elm executable is 'tag'ged so Indigo Magic can identify it. Removal: If you don't like it, do 'make remove'. Usage: The Elm icon behaves much like the Mail icon. The mailbox and mailfile icons have been changed to use Elm rather than Mail. Here are the details: The Elm icon ------------ Open opens an Elm window. Alt-open prompts you for a recipient and opens an Elm window in send-only mode. Dropping a mailfile onto Elm opens an Elm window for that mailfile. Dropping a non-mailfile onto Elm prompts you for a recipient and sends the file without opening a window. The mailbox icon ---------------- Open runs a mailbox. When mail arrives and you click on the mailbox, an Elm an Elm window will open. Alt-open prompts you for an alternative mailbox command. This isn't too useful, but you can fool with the latitude and longitude. The mailfile icon ----------------- Open opens an Elm window for that mailfile. Alt-open opens an editor window for that mailfile. Dropping a mailfile onto another mailfile concatenates the files. Dropping a non-mailfile onto a mailfile doesn't do anything. Printing a mailfile sends it to the printer. Zowie! Note that you can "open" an icon by double-clicking on it or selecting it and choosing "Open" from the right-button popup, and you can "alt-open" an icon by holding down Alt and doing either of the foregoing. You can drop multiple icons on another icon by selecting the icons you want to drop, then dragging and dropping, or by selecting the icons you want to drop and the icon you want to drop them on, then opening the group. Sensible things will usually happen when you do any of the above. Notes: This is a revision of elm-ws-support, which did the same sort of thing for the IRIX 4.0.x Workspace. Indigo Magic doesn't have .wsrc files or personal filetype rules, so elm-im-support is much simpler than elm-ws-support. In fact, the Makefile is really excessive. Now you know why it's here. If you have MediaMail installed, opening a mailfile brings up MediaMail. If you install elm-im-support, opening a mailfile brings up Elm. This is intentional. The author guarantees neither the safety nor usefulness of any of this. He does welcome comments.
